Construction Soon To Begin on Pickwick Section of Syracuse-Wawasee Trail
October 18, 2008

K21 Foundation recently approved a grant of $75,000 which will be used by the Syracuse-Wawasee Park Foundation to fund the construction of a pedestrian bridge along the Pickwick Section of the Syracuse-Wawasee Trail.  Once completed, this 3.6 mile recreational trail route will connect Lake Wawasee's north shore areas with the Wawasee Village area and then west to Wawasee High School.

"Having opportunities to pursue activities that promote and increase healthy lifestyles is an important priority of this foundation and our community," said K21 President Rich Haddad.  "It's a bonus when one of those opportunities, like a safe and scenic route for walking and biking, is a significant attraction for the citizens and visitors of the Syracuse Community."

According to Syracuse-Wawasee Park Foundation President Spike Ford, "this bridge will be located on Eastshore Drive, south of the Cornelius Road intersection, and will eventually be in the middle of a 6,500 foot long segment of trail.  In addition to the bridge the segment will include an overlook and three boardwalk sections, all of which border wetlands between Lake Wawasee and Syracuse Lake."

The contract for the project was awarded to Beer and Slabaugh, which plans to begin construction of the bridge and boardwalk sometime this fall or early winter.  The asphalt portions of the remaining east/west section of the trail will be completed in the spring of 2009.

K21 Foundation exists for the benefit of Kosciusko County citizens to ensure health care services are provided, and to advance prevention and healthy lifestyles.  For more information about the K21 Foundation, call

Wawasee Home Tour

On July 26, 2008, the Wawasee Property Owners Association hosted its first annual Wawasee Home Tour. Over 250 people traveled via pontoon boats to tour six homes along Lake Wawasee's north shore.  Proceeds from the event were donated to the Syracuse-Wawasee Park Foundation's Trail Project.  Pictured above, passengers leave their boat at the home of Marianne and Randall Tobias.

The Trail Committe sincerely appreciates the generous support of the WPOA!  Thank you!

Transportation Enhancement Grant Application

In August, 2008, The Syracuse-Wawasee Trail Committee submitted an application for a Transportation Enhancement Grant through the Indiana Department of Transportation. The Trail Committee would use this money to design and build a section of trail along State Road 13, beginning at Harkless Road and running south and east to Waco Drive at the Sleepy Owl.  Many other projects region-wide are competing for these funds, and each is being graded on a point system.
